Hadith 4041

And in Surah Al-Imran, the statement of Allah, the Exalted: "And remember when you (O Muhammad) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle, and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." And in the same Surah, the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "So do not lose heart and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers. If a wound has touched you, be sure a similar wound has touched the others. Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men by turns, so that Allah may make evident those who believe and may take to Himself from among you martyrs—and Allah does not like the wrongdoers—and that Allah may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers. Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who strive [in His cause] and made evident those who are steadfast? And you certainly wished for death before you met it, and now you have seen it [with your own eyes]." And the statement of Allah, the Exalted: "And Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission, until [the moment] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them so He might test you. And He has forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers." (And the verse:) "And do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allah as dead..." to the end of the verse.

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: On the day of Uhud. the Prophet said, "This is Gabriel holding the head of his horse and equipped with war material.'

Hadith Commentary:

This hadith has already been mentioned earlier, where instead of the Battle of Uhud, the words "Battle of Badr" are used.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 3995)
Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah, under the heading "Tanbih" (Note), has deduced from this that the mention of the Battle of Uhud in this hadith is based on an error (wahm).
(Fath al-Bari: 7/436)
However, to declare it an error is not correct.
It is possible that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used these words on both occasions, and the descent of the angels is established in both battles, as Imam Bukhari rahimahullah himself has presented a hadith regarding this.

Hazrat Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu states that during the Battle of Uhud, I saw two men fighting alongside the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam who were dressed in white garments.
I had never seen them before nor after that.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4054)
In Sahih Muslim, the wording is:
On the day of Uhud, I saw two men fighting on the right and left of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who were wearing white clothes.
I had never seen them before nor after that.
They were Jibril (Gabriel) alayhis salam and Mika'il (Michael) alayhis salam.
(Sahih Muslim, al-Fada'il, Hadith: 6004(2306))
From these narrations, it is evident that the presence of angels is not exclusive to the Day of Badr.
Their presence, and even their fighting, is established in Uhud as well; therefore, to consider the words "Day of Uhud" in this narration as an error is questionable.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: Those whom Allah Ta'ala sent to the battlefield along with many other angels to aid the Muslims.

In the narration of Sa'id ibn Mansur, it is mentioned that Jibril (alayhis salam) was mounted on a red horse. Its forelock hair was braided.

Ibn Ishaq has narrated from Abu Waqid al-Laythi that on the day of Badr, I went to strike a disbeliever, but before I could reach him, his head was separated from his body and fell by itself. My sword had not even reached near him.

Al-Bayhaqi has narrated that on the day of Badr, a fierce wind blew, and then a second time, another fierce wind blew. The first wind signified the arrival of Jibril (alayhis salam). The second was at the arrival of Mika'il (alayhis salam).

Although a single angel of Allah would have sufficed to destroy all the disbelievers in the world, the Lord willed that the angels be sent as soldiers and that their actions be in accordance with human habit and strength.

Hadith Commentary:

In one narration, it is mentioned that Jibril (alayhis salam) was mounted on a red horse whose forelock hair was braided, wearing armor and covered in dust. He presented himself before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said:
“O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! Allah, the Exalted, has sent me to you and has commanded me not to leave you until you are pleased. Are you pleased?” The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied:
“Yes, I am pleased.”
It is narrated from Ibn Ishaq that on the day of Badr, drowsiness overcame the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then when he awoke, he said:
“O Abu Bakr! Rejoice, for Allah’s help has come to you. This is Jibril (alayhis salam) holding the reins of his horse.”
(al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah by Ibn Hisham: 1/626 and Fath al-Bari: 7/390)

The wisdom behind the descent of the angels in this battle was to strengthen the hearts of the Muslims, as the Noble Qur’an has clarified.
The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“The participation of the angels was so that you may rejoice and your hearts may be reassured.”
(Al Imran: 3/126)
Although Jibril (alayhis salam) could have destroyed the polytheists with just a single feather of his wing, doing so would have been contrary to the usual way (sunnah) of Allah.
And Allah knows best.
