Narrated Sa`id bin Jubair: I mentioned to Ibn `Abbas Surat-Hashr. He said, "Call it Surat-an-Nadir."
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) refrained from calling it Surah Hashr for two reasons:
➊ Among Muslims, "Hashr" (gathering) is commonly understood to refer to the gathering of the Hereafter, whereas in this surah, the "first gathering" refers to the expulsion of Banu Nadir.
➋ Calling it Surah Hashr leaves ambiguity, whereas naming it Surah Banu Nadir points directly to the actual incident.
However, all the Qurra (reciters) have adopted this name for the surah, and it is famous by this name. Furthermore, when naming a surah, the literal meaning is not necessarily considered.
In addition, this mentioned name for the surah is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu).
