Hadith 4007

Narrated Az-Zuhri: I heard `Urwa bin Az-Zubair talking to `Umar bin `Abdul `Aziz during the latter's Governorship (at Medina), he said, "Al-Mughira bin Shu`ba delayed the `Asr prayer when he was the ruler of Al-Kufa. On that, Abu Mas`ud. `Uqba bin `Amr Al-Ansari, the grand-father of Zaid bin Hasan, who was one of the Badr warriors, came in and said, (to Al-Mughira), 'You know that Gabriel came down and offered the prayer and Allah's Apostle prayed five prescribed prayers, and Gabriel said (to the Prophet ), "I have been ordered to do so (i.e. offer these five prayers at these fixed stated hours of the day).

Hadith Commentary:
Abu Mas'ud's (radi Allahu anhu) daughter, Umm Bishr, was first married to Sa'id bin Zayd bin 'Amr bin Nufayl.
Later, Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) married her, and from her womb, Zayd bin Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) was born.
Abu Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) was a participant in the Battle of Badr.
This is the reason for the correspondence with the chapter.

Hadith Commentary:
Angel Jibril (alayhis salam) came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to practically teach him the timings of the prayers.
Accordingly, by performing all five prayers at both their earliest and latest times, he demonstrated them to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
There is an indication of this in the hadith here.
Urwah ibn Zubayr (rahimahullah) reproached Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (rahimahullah) for delaying the Asr prayer and presented the aforementioned hadith as evidence. Then, upon Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz’s inquiry, he narrated the hadith with its chain of transmission, and upon hearing it, Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz attained complete certainty.
From this hadith, it is also established that the Asr prayer should be performed at its earliest time,
as is the practice of the Jama‘at Ahl al-Hadith.
It is also evident that the practice of those who delay the Asr prayer is contrary to the Sunnah.
Some people are in the habit of performing the Asr prayer right at the time of sunset; such people have been called hypocrites (munafiq).

Hadith Commentary:

Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair reproached Umar bin Abdul Aziz rahimahullah for delaying the Asr prayer and presented the hadith as evidence. Then, upon Umar bin Abdul Aziz's inquiry, he stated the chain of narration of the hadith, upon hearing which Umar bin Abdul Aziz rahimahullah attained complete certainty.

From this hadith, it is established that the Asr prayer should be performed at its earliest time, as is the practice of the Jama‘at Ahl al-Hadith. This also indicates the importance of the prayer times, as Hazrat Jibril alayhis salam himself came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to practically teach him these times, and performed all five prayers at both their earliest and latest times to impart this knowledge. Umar bin Abdul Aziz rahimahullah was astonished at the fact that Hazrat Jibril alayhis salam led the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in prayer. Upon this, Urwah narrated the hadith with its chain of transmission. (: Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Mawaqit, Hadith: 521)

The name of Hazrat Abu Mas‘ud is Uqbah bin Amr al-Ansari, who was the grandfather of Zayd bin Hasan and participated in the Battle of Badr. (: Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4007)

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established from this hadith the existence of Hazrat Jibril alayhis salam and his actions. And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: From the narration of Abu Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu, the importance of the prayer times becomes evident, as Allah Ta’ala specifically sent down Jibril Amin for their instruction, and he led the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in prayer at these times so that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam could fully understand the beginning and end of the times.

495. Commentary:

➊ Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz rahimahullah delayed the Asr prayer from its preferred time, not from the entire time. And this was during the era of Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, when he was appointed as the governor of Madinah on his behalf. The purpose of ‘Urwah was to emphasize that the timing of prayer holds utmost importance, to the extent that Jibril alayhis salam descended to inform about the times; therefore, one should not be negligent in performing the prayer.

➋ Jibril alayhis salam led the prayer for two days: on the first day, all prayers were performed at their earliest time, and on the second day, at their latest time. In this narration, the times are not mentioned because the sole purpose was to show that Jibril alayhis salam had indicated the times; the knowledge of the times was already known to Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz rahimahullah. It is narrated about him that after hearing this narration, he never delayed the prayer again. For details, see: [ذخیرۃ العقبٰی شرح سنن النسائي : 6؍241 ۔ 255]

➌ If rulers commit any act contrary to the Sunnah, it is the responsibility of the people of knowledge to correct them and to admonish them from time to time.

➍ It is permissible to ask a scholar for the evidence of an issue, and the scholar should satisfy the questioner with pure proofs from the Book and the Sunnah.

➎ In times of disagreement, reference will be made to the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

➏ A solitary report (khabar wahid) is authoritative.

Commentary:

(1)
In the Noble Qur’an, there is a command to perform the prayer (salah) at its appointed time, as is stated: ﴿إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا﴾ () (an-Nisa: 4/103).
It is obligatory for the believers to perform the prayer at the prescribed times.
This has also been clarified practically through revelation.

(2)
For the determination of the prayer times, the descent of Jibril (alayhis salam) at the time of each prayer also makes clear the importance of prayer, and especially the importance of congregational prayer.

(3)
In Islamic society, even the highest official is not above criticism, but when criticizing, it is necessary to observe manners and respect.

(4)
If an issue is not clear, one may seek clarification from the one explaining the issue.
This is not contrary to respect.

(5)
If a person, upon hearing a hadith, hesitates to accept it due to some confusion, he should not be declared a denier of hadith; rather, an effort should be made to remove his confusion.

(6)
The practice of mentioning the chains of narration (isnad) of hadith began in the era of the Tabi‘in.
As a result, distinguishing between authentic (sahih) and weak (da‘if) hadith became easy.
