Hadith Commentary:
The takbirs (declarations of "Allahu Akbar") are recited at all funeral prayers, but Ali (radi Allahu anhu) recited more takbirs at their funeral—five or six, as mentioned in other narrations.
It is as if Ali (radi Allahu anhu) explained the reason for reciting more takbirs: that the deceased was a participant of Badr (Badri).
They held a special status.
Although five, six, or even seven takbirs have been recited at funeral prayers, the final practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was four takbirs. Therefore, now there is consensus (ijma‘) of the Ummah upon this number.

Hadith Commentary:

Takbirs are recited in all funeral prayers, but Ali (radi Allahu anhu) recited more takbirs in his (i.e., Sahl ibn Hunayf's) funeral prayer, and the reason he gave for saying more takbirs was that he (Sahl) had participated in the Battle of Badr and, due to this, held a special status.

Although narrations mention saying five, six, or even seven takbirs in the funeral prayer, the final practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) regarding the funeral prayer was to say four takbirs, and there is consensus of the Ummah upon this.

This hadith mentions the participation of Sahl ibn Hunayf (radi Allahu anhu) in the Battle of Badr; for this reason, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has narrated it.

Lexical Explanation:
«بَدَرِيّ» "Badri" refers to someone who participated in the Battle of Badr. The honor and greatness of being a Badri is such that six takbirs are said, so that more supplication can be made for them in this manner.

Benefit:
From this, it is also established that, considering someone's greatness and honor, more than four takbirs can be said. Further details have been provided in the previous hadith (Bulugh al-Maram, Hadith 252).

Explanation:
[حضرت سہل رضی اللہ عنہ بن حنیف ] "Hanif" is a diminutive form. He was an Ansari, from the Aws tribe, and a resident of Madinah. He was present at the Battle of Badr and other battles and expeditions. He remained steadfast with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam during the Battle of Uhud. Ali radi Allahu anhu appointed him as governor of Basrah, and he was also with him at Siffin. After the migration to Madinah, brotherhood (mu’akhah) was established between Ali radi Allahu anhu and him. He passed away in 38 Hijri.
