Narrated Subaia bint Al-Harith: That she was married to Sad bin Khaula who was from the tribe of Bani 'Amr bin Luai, and was one of those who fought the Badr battle. He died while she wa pregnant during Hajjat-ul-Wada.' Soon after his death, she gave birth to a child. When she completed the term of deliver (i.e. became clean), she prepared herself for suitors. Abu As-Sanabil bin Bu'kak, a man from the tribe of Bani Abd-ud-Dal called on her and said to her, "What! I see you dressed up for the people to ask you in marriage. Do you want to marry By Allah, you are not allowed to marry unless four months and ten days have elapsed (after your husband's death)." Subai'a in her narration said, "When he (i.e. Abu As-Sanabil) said this to me. I put on my dress in the evening and went to Allah's Apostle and asked him about this problem. He gave the verdict that I was free to marry as I had already given birth to my child and ordered me to marry if I wished."

Hadith Commentary:
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is that it mentions Sa'd ibn Khawlah as being a participant in the Battle of Badr.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated the full account of the narration from Layth ibn Sa'd in his Tarikh.
Here, he sufficed with only this chain of transmission, because the intended purpose here is merely to establish that Iyas radi Allahu anhu was a participant in Badr.
This hadith also makes it clear that a pregnant woman, after giving birth, may marry if she wishes.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In this hadith, it is mentioned that Sa'd ibn Khawlah (radi Allahu anhu) participated in the Battle of Badr. Furthermore, the narration of Layth ibn Sa'd (rahimahullah) has been detailed in full by Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) in his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir."
At this point, only the participation of Iyas ibn Bukayr (radi Allahu anhu) in the Battle of Badr has been mentioned, because that was all that was intended to be conveyed here.
➋
This hadith also shows that the waiting period (‘iddah) for a pregnant woman is until she gives birth. After that, if she wishes, she may marry. ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) used to say:
If a pregnant woman’s husband passes away, and she is being given the ritual bath (ghusl) and is still on the bathing platform, and she gives birth to the child, then her waiting period due to death is completed, and she is permitted to marry.
