Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf: While I was fighting in the front file on the day (of the battle) of Badr, suddenly I looked behind and saw on my right and left two young boys and did not feel safe by standing between them. Then one of them asked me secretly so that his companion may not hear, "O Uncle! Show me Abu Jahl." I said, "O nephew! What will you do to him?" He said, "I have promised Allah that if I see him (i.e. Abu Jahl), I will either kill him or be killed before I kill him." Then the other said the same to me secretly so that his companion should not hear. I would not have been pleased to be in between two other men instead of them. Then I pointed him (i.e. Abu Jahl) out to them. Both of them attacked him like two hawks till they knocked him down. Those two boys were the sons of 'Afra' (i.e. an Ansari woman).

Hadith Commentary:
In some narrations, it is mentioned that these two were Mu'adh ibn 'Afra' and Mu'awwidh ibn 'Afra' ibn Jamuh.
The mother of Mu'adh and Mu'awwidh was named 'Afra'.
Their father's name was Harith ibn Rifa'ah.
These boys had already pledged that Abu Jahl insults our Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); we will not rest until we have finished him.
Allah fulfilled their resolve.
They identified Abu Jahl and rushed upon him just as a hawk swoops upon a sparrow.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The names of these two boys were Mu'adh and Mu'awwidh. They had already pledged that Abu Jahl insults our Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), so we will not rest until we eliminate him. Thus, Allah, the Exalted, fulfilled their resolve. However, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu) thought that these were young boys who, at the time of need, would not be able to protect him from the enemy.
➋
Some scholars have interpreted this to mean that Abdur Rahman ibn Awf did not recognize them and became apprehensive, thinking perhaps they were enemies. But this interpretation does not seem correct, because an enemy would not stand in such a manner. The first meaning is correct: due to their youth, he was hesitant that if both of them fled, he would be left alone, or at the time of the enemy's attack, they would not be able to defend him. As clarified in one narration, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu) thought, "On both my sides are two boys, so the enemy will attack me and these two will not be able to defend me."
(: Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Fard al-Khums, Hadith: 3141 and Fath al-Bari: 7/385)
➌
These two boys were likened to a falcon because in that is the attribute of bravery and swooping upon prey. In the same way, these two swooped upon Abu Jahl until they killed him.
