Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf: "I had an agreement with Umaiya bin Khalaf (that he would look after my relatives and property in Mecca, and I would look after his relatives and property in Medina)." `Abdur-Rahman then mentioned the killing of Umaiya and his son on the day of Badr, and Bilal said, "Woe to me if Umaiya remains safe (i.e. alive) . Hadith Commentary:
1.
Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) was a slave of Umayyah bin Khalaf.
When he embraced Islam, Umayyah began to inflict severe punishments upon him.
Eventually, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) purchased him and set him free.
2.
In the aforementioned hadith, Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) expressed his emotions for this very reason.
The details of this incident are as follows: Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (radi Allahu anhu) says that he had made a written agreement with Umayyah bin Khalaf that Umayyah would safeguard his property in Makkah,
and he (Abdur Rahman) would safeguard Umayyah’s property in Madinah Tayyibah.
When the people at Badr had fallen asleep, I went towards the mountain so that, according to the agreement, I could protect his property.
Suddenly, Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) saw him.
He ran to the Ansar and said:
“If today Umayyah escapes, then I will have no salvation.”
After this, a group from the Ansar set out in pursuit of us.
When I sensed the danger that they would catch us, I let go of Umayyah’s son so that they would become occupied with killing him and I could escape with Umayyah, but they killed his son and quickly pursued us and caught up with us.
Umayyah was a very heavy man. When they caught us, I told Umayyah to lie down on his knees. He lay down, and I bent over him to protect him, but the Ansar began striking him with their swords from behind me until they killed him.
My foot was also wounded by their sword.
The narrator says that Abdur Rahman bin Awf (radi Allahu anhu) used to show us the scar from that wound afterwards.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Wakala, Hadith: 2301)
Since Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) also participated with the Ansar in striking Umayyah with the sword at the time of his killing,
Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) is also counted among the killers of Umayyah. Another aspect of Umayyah’s character will be mentioned in the next hadith.
