Hadith 3970

Narrated Abu 'Is-haq: A man asked Al-Bara' and I was listening, "Did `Ali take part in (the battle of) Badr?" Al-Bara' said, "(Yes). he even met (his enemies) in a duel and was clad in two armors (one over the other).

Hadith Commentary:
This person may have assumed, due to Ali's (radi Allahu anhu) young age, that perhaps he did not participate in the Battle of Badr.
Al-Bara' (radi Allahu anhu) dispelled his incorrect assumption by stating that not only did he go out to the battlefield, but he entered the field for combat and killed Walid ibn Utbah.
Mubarazah means to come out onto the battlefield and challenge the enemy.
Those who rebelled against Ali (radi Allahu anhu) used to search for various faults in him, none of which had any reality.
The answer given by al-Bara' (radi Allahu anhu) is, in effect, a slap in the face of the opponents.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:

Those who had rebelled against Ali (radi Allahu anhu) used to constantly search for various faults regarding him, none of which had any basis in reality.
Among them, due to Ali’s (radi Allahu anhu) young age, someone might have assumed that perhaps he did not participate in the Battle of Badr. When this was asked to al-Bara’ ibn Azib (radi Allahu anhu), he replied:
Not only did Ali (radi Allahu anhu) participate, but he also challenged Walid ibn Utbah on the battlefield and finished him off with the very first strike.

It should be noted that (ظَاهَر) also means to wear two coats of armor, one over the other.
And Allah knows best.
