Narrated Qais: I heard Abu Dhar swearing that the following Holy verse:-- "These two opponents (believers and disbelievers) disputing with each other about their Lord," (22.19) was revealed concerning those men who fought on the day of Badr, namely, Hamza, `Ali, Ubaida bin Al-Harith, `Utba and Shaiba----the two sons of Rabi`a-- and Al-Walid bin `Utba.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Some people think that in the noble verse, "mubarazat" (single combat) refers to Muslims and the People of the Book. However, the well-known view is that this mentioned dispute took place on the Day of Badr between the Muslims and the disbelievers. Accordingly, Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) swore an oath and said that the aforementioned noble verse was revealed concerning those four individuals who came out from their respective ranks to engage in combat during the Battle of Badr.
2.
Among them, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and Walid ibn Utbah were young men, while the remaining four were of mature age. And Allah knows best.
