Hadith Commentary:
In these narrations, the name of the narrator Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) appears repeatedly.
He is the famous Companion Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (radi Allahu anhu), whose name was Jundub and whose title was Masih al-Islam.
He belonged to the tribe of Ghifar.
He was a monotheist even during the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah).
He was the fifth person to embrace Islam.
He had sent his brother to inquire about the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
Later, he himself went and, after facing great difficulties, was able to reach the court of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
His circumstances have already been described in detail earlier.
He passed away in the year 31 AH at the place of Rabadhah, where he used to live alone.
When he was near death, his noble wife began to weep and said, “You are departing from this world in a desert, and there is not even a cloth here for your shroud.”
He said, “Stop crying and listen! The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) once said that I would die in the desert.
At the time of my death, a group of Muslims will reach me in the desert.
Therefore, stand by the roadside and wait for this group.
This unseen help, as foretold by the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), will surely arrive.”
Accordingly, his wife (radi Allahu anha) stood by the path.
After only a short wait, some riders appeared in the distance.
She signaled to them, and they stopped. Upon learning the situation, they all went to visit Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu), who was very pleased to see them and related to them the above-mentioned prophecy of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Then he advised that if his wife had any cloth for his shroud, he should be shrouded in that, and he made them swear that none among them who held even a minor position in the government should shroud him.
Among that group, there was only one young Ansari who fit this description, and he said, “Uncle! I have one sheet, and in addition, I have two garments that were specially woven by my mother’s hand.
I will shroud you in these.”
Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) happily said, “Yes, you alone should shroud me in those garments.”
After this bequest, his pure soul departed to the higher realm.
That group of Companions (radi Allahu anhum) shrouded and buried him.
The shroud was provided by that Ansari youth, and the funeral prayer was led by Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu).
Then all of them together buried him in a corner of that desert.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
Previously, the rule of battle was that one man would come out into the field and, challenging the opposing side, would say:
Is there anyone to face me?
Then, from the other side, one man would come forward to confront him.
This was called "mubarazah" (single combat).
A contest would take place between them, while the rest of the ranks would watch as spectators.
Sometimes the matter would be decided right there, and sometimes a general attack would be launched.
The Quraysh of Makkah did the same.
Three men came out from their side:
Utbah, Shaybah, and Walid, and they said:
O Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! Send someone to fight us in the field.
From the Ansar, three young men came out, but they (the Quraysh) said:
We do not wish to fight you.
We want to fight our own kin, that is, the Quraysh.
At that moment, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“O Hamzah (radi Allahu anhu)! Rise. O Ali (radi Allahu anhu)! You also enter the field, and O Ubaydah (radi Allahu anhu)! You too come forward for the contest.”
Hamzah (radi Allahu anhu) stood against Shaybah, and Ali (radi Allahu anhu) stood against Walid.
Hamzah (radi Allahu anhu) killed Shaybah with the very first blow, and Ali (radi Allahu anhu) also swiftly killed his opponent, Walid ibn Utbah. However, between Ubaydah (radi Allahu anhu) and his opponent, Utbah ibn Rabi‘ah, there was an exchange of blows, and each inflicted a deep wound on the other.
Meanwhile, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and Hamzah (radi Allahu anhu), having finished off their own opponents, came over and fell upon Utbah, finishing him off, and then carried Ubaydah (radi Allahu anhu) away.
His leg had been severed, and on the return from the battle, in the valley of Safra, he passed away.
