Hadith 3967

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الصَّوَّافُ ، حَدَّثَنَا يُوسُفُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ، كَانَ يَنْزِلُ فِي بَنِي ضُبَيْعَةَ وَهُوَ مَوْلًى لِبَنِي سَدُوسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ،عَنْ أَبِي مِجْلَزٍ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ عُبَادٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : " فِينَا نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ هَذَانِ خَصْمَانِ اخْتَصَمُوا فِي رَبِّهِمْ سورة الحج آية 19 " .
Narrated `Ali: The following Holy Verse:-- "These two opponents (believers and disbelievers) dispute with each other about their Lord." (22.19) was revealed concerning us.

Hadith Commentary:
Qatadah said that by this verse, the People of the Book and the People of Islam are meant, while both claimed precedence for themselves. Mujahid said that believers and disbelievers are intended. According to Allamah Ibn Jarir, the verse includes everyone—whoever is in opposition between disbelief and Islam, the result is as mentioned further in the verse:
﴿فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قُطِّعَتْ لَهُمْ ثِيَابٌ مِنْ نَارٍ﴾ (Al-Hajj: 19)
That is, garments of fire will be tailored for the disbelievers, and scalding hot water from Hell will be poured over their heads.
