Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
The details of this narration are as follows:
Abdur Rahman bin Awf (radi Allahu anhu) says that on the day of the Battle of Badr, I was standing in the ranks, when suddenly I turned and saw that on both my right and left were two young men.
In my heart, I began to wish:
If only there were strong young men on my right and left.
Just then, one of them, hiding from his companion, said to me:
Uncle! Show me Abu Jahl.
I said:
Nephew! What will you do with him? He said:
I have been told that he insults the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If I see him, my existence will not be separated from his existence until the one whose death is decreed first perishes.
Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu) says:
I was amazed at his courage.
Meanwhile, the other person, drawing my attention with a gesture, said the same thing.
After a few moments, I saw that Abu Jahl was moving about among the people.
As soon as I saw him, I said:
This is Abu Jahl about whom you were just asking me.
As soon as they heard this, both of them rushed forward with their swords and struck him down, killing him, then returned to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Which of you killed him?" Both said, I killed him. He said:
"Have you both cleaned your swords?" They replied, No.
He looked at both of their swords and said:
"You both killed him."
However, the equipment of Abu Jahl was given to Mu'adh bin Amr bin Jamuh.
The names of both attackers are Mu'adh bin Amr bin Jamuh and Mu'adh bin 'Afra.
