Narrated Al-Bara: The companions of (the Prophet) Muhammad who took part in Badr, told me that their number was that of Saul's (i.e. Talut's) companions who crossed the river (of Jordan) with him and they were over three-hundred-and-ten men. By Allah, none crossed the river with him but a believer. (See Qur'an 2:249)

Hadith Commentary:
1.
When the battle between Talut and Jalut began in the outskirts of Damascus, Allah Almighty intended to test the army of Talut through the River Jordan.
Hazrat Talut said to his army:
“Whoever drinks water from this river is not my companion.
My companion is the one who does not taste it, except that he takes a handful (chullu) of water.”
Then, except for a few men among them, all drank their fill of water.

2.
Hazrat Dawud (alayhis salam) was also included in the army of Talut, and he killed Jalut, who was leading the disbelievers.
3.
The meaning of this hadith is that just as the companions of Talut were believers, likewise all the companions of Badr were also believers.
This does not mean that those who did not participate in Badr were not believers, because this was an emergency battle.
In short, the companions of Badr were equal to the companions of Talut in both number and the quality of faith.
The number of the companions of Badr was approximately three hundred and thirteen.
And Allah knows best.
4.
Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has written that there are eight individuals who, despite not participating in the Battle of Badr, were given a share of the spoils of war because they could not participate due to a specific excuse.
Their details are as follows:
©.
Hazrat Uthman bin Affan (radi Allahu anhu) could not participate due to nursing Hazrat Ruqayyah (radi Allahu anha).
©.
Hazrat Talhah bin Ubaydullah and Sa’id bin Zayd (radi Allahu anhuma) were sent to gather information about the conditions of the disbelievers’ caravan.
© Hazrat Abu Lubabah (radi Allahu anhu) was sent back from the place of Ruha to guard Madinah.
©.
Hazrat Asim bin Adi (radi Allahu anhu) was appointed over the people of ‘Aliyah, and Harith bin Hatib (radi Allahu anhu) was appointed as a supervisor over the tribe of ‘Amr bin ‘Awf.
©.
Hazrat Harith bin Sammah (radi Allahu anhu) fell at the place of Ruha and his bone was broken, so he was sent back to Madinah.

The same happened with Hazrat Khawwat bin Jubayr (radi Allahu anhu).
