Hadith 3954

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The believers who failed to join the Ghazwa of Badr and those who took part in it are not equal (in reward).

Hadith Commentary:

In this noble verse, the greatness and virtue of the Companions of Badr are described, such that no one can attain their rank and status. Accordingly, Allah Almighty said to the people of Badr:
“O people of Badr! Do whatever you wish, Paradise has been made obligatory for you.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 3983)

The intent of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) is that the aforementioned verse was revealed during the Battle of Badr.
Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) also appears to incline towards this view; this is why he has mentioned this hadith in the context of the Battle of Badr. Meanwhile, other scholars are of the opinion that the aforementioned verse is not only about the people of Badr, but rather, it states a general principle which also includes the people of Badr.
And Allah knows best.
