And the statement of Allah, "And indeed Allah helped you at Badr when you were weak. So fear Allah so that you may be grateful. O Prophet! Remember when you said to the believers, 'Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?' Yes, if you remain patient and fear Allah, and they come upon you suddenly, your Lord will help you with five thousand marked angels. And Allah did this only so that you may rejoice and your hearts be at ease thereby. And victory is only from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise. And this help was so that He might cut off a part of the disbelievers or subdue them so that they turn back disappointed." Wahshi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Tu‘aymah bin ‘Adi bin Khiyar in the battle of Badr. And the statement of Allah (in Surah Al-Anfal), "And remember when Allah promised you one of the two parties would fall to you," to the end.
Narrated Ka`b bin Malik: I never failed to join Allah's Apostle in any of his Ghazawat except in the Ghazwa of Tabuk. However, I did not take part in the Ghazwa of Badr, but none who failed to take part in it, was blamed, for Allah's Apostle had gone out to meet the caravans of (Quraish, but Allah caused them (i.e. Muslims) to meet their enemy unexpectedly (with no previous intention) .

Hadith Commentary:
Although Ka'b (radi Allahu anhu) did not participate in the Battle of Badr either, since in Badr the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not set out with the intention of battle, he did not make it obligatory for everyone to go out. In contrast, in the Battle of Tabuk, there was a command for all Muslims to go along; therefore, those who did not go were reproached for this reason.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has mentioned a portion of the hadith of Ka'b bin Malik radi Allahu anhu. Its detailed mention will come later; however, at this point, the background of the Battle of Badr is intended to be explained: the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not set out with the intention of battle, but rather, his purpose was only to intercept the caravan of Abu Sufyan, which was returning from the region of Syria after purchasing weapons. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam received news of this, he devised a plan to seize the military equipment from them, because in such emergency situations, seizing weapons from the enemy is the best military strategy; on the contrary, showing leniency in such circumstances is a political mistake.
2.
Allah, the Exalted, had promised the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that He would grant him success over one of the two groups—the trade caravan or the army—but the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma'in preferred success over Abu Sufyan's caravan, because there was hope of obtaining military equipment without fighting. Abu Sufyan took the coastal route and succeeded in getting his caravan past the Muslims safely. Meanwhile, Abu Jahl set out from Makkah with a force of one thousand to aid this caravan, and thus, at the place of Badr, a great battle between truth and falsehood took place.
3.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not set out from Madinah Tayyibah with the intention of war. Therefore, Allah, the Exalted, did not express any displeasure towards those who did not participate in the Battle of Badr. However, the matter of the Battle of Tabuk was different from this. In that instance, all Muslims were commanded to go out for battle, so those who did not go were subjected to reproach, among whom was Ka'b bin Malik radi Allahu anhu as well.
