Hadith 3945

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: They, the people of the Scriptures, divided this Scripture into parts, believing in some portions of it and disbelieving the others. (See 15:91)

Hadith Commentary:
Just as they denied the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
The relevance of this hadith to the chapter is difficult to ascertain.
‘Ayni said that in the following hadith, the People of the Book are mentioned, and for this reason, the narration from Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was cited.
The evil trait of the Jews that is mentioned here has now become prevalent among the general Muslims as well: they act upon some verses and practically deny others; they follow some Sunnahs and oppose others.
This is generally the condition of the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had already stated that my Ummah will follow the footsteps of the Jews step by step, and that very situation is occurring today.
Rahimahullah ‘alayna.

Hadith Commentary:
In the Noble Qur’an it is stated:
“As We sent down (Our punishment) upon those who divided (the Scripture),
those who made the Qur’an (i.e., the Torah) into parts.”
(al-Hijr: 90–91)

In the explanation of this verse, Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) said:
By this are meant the Jews and Christians, who divided their Qur’an, that is, the Torah and the Gospel, into pieces—accepting some parts and rejecting others.

In this hadith, the disgraceful conduct of the People of the Book is exposed: they treated their scripture in a most improper manner, and thus, these people are not trustworthy.

And Allah knows best.
