Narrated 'Ubaidullah bin Ad bin Khiyair: I went to `Uthman. After reciting Tashah-hud, he said,. "Then after no doubt, Allah sent Muhammad with the Truth, and I was amongst those who responded to the Call of Allah and His Prophet and believed in the message of Muhammad. Then took part in the two migrations. I became the son-in-law of Allah's Apostle and gave the pledge of allegiance to him By Allah, I never disobeyed him, nor did I deceive him till Allah took him unto Him."

Hadith Commentary:

‘Ubaydullah bin ‘Adi bin Khiyar radi Allahu anhu came to ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu with the complaint against Walid bin ‘Uqbah, that he drinks alcohol and there is much gossip among the people regarding him.
The details of this are mentioned in Hadith 3696.

The purpose at this point is that ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu said:
“I have performed two migrations (hijrah):
One migration was from Makkah al-Mukarramah to Abyssinia (Habashah), and with him was his wife Ruqayyah bint Rasul Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Then they returned from there to Makkah.
The second migration was from Makkah al-Mukarramah to Madinah Tayyibah.
At that time as well, his wife Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha was with him. That is why it is said that he performed two migrations.”

It should be noted that Fatimah radi Allahu anha and Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha were brought to Madinah Tayyibah by Zayd bin Harithah and Abu Rafi‘ radi Allahu anhuma.
Zaynab radi Allahu anha stayed for some time in Makkah al-Mukarramah with her husband Abu al-‘As radi Allahu anhu.

Hadith Commentary:
Uthman Ghani (radi Allahu anhu) removed Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) from the governorship of Kufa and appointed Walid in his place. Walid committed several excesses there.
He stood to lead the prayer while intoxicated by wine.
Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) delayed in punishing him.
This was displeasing to the people, so they asked Ubaydullah ibn Adi, who was Uthman’s nephew and a close confidant, to speak to Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) about this case.
At first, Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) thought that perhaps Ubaydullah was seeking some service or money, and if it was not given, he would become upset and cause trouble for no reason.
Later, when Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) understood the matter, he called Ubaydullah and discussed it with him, as is mentioned in the narration.
Ubaydullah informed Uthman that he was saying these things purely out of goodwill. Afterwards, Uthman had Walid flogged for the prescribed punishment (hadd) for drinking wine at the hands of Ali (radi Allahu anhu), as has already been mentioned.
The meaning of the chapter is derived from the migration to Abyssinia, although there was a second migration towards the land of Abyssinia, as Imam Ahmad, Ibn Ishaq, and others have narrated from Ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu): that initially, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent us—who were about eighty (80) people—to the land of the Negus (Najashi). Then news reached them that the polytheists had prostrated with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) during Surah Najm and had become Muslim.
Upon hearing this, they returned to Mecca, where they suffered even more at the hands of the polytheists than before, until they migrated again. By that time, there were eighty men and eighteen women, but Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) did not make this second migration; therefore, by the first two migrations, the migration to Abyssinia and to Madinah are meant. Although the migration to Madinah was the second migration, both are collectively called “the first two” (awwalayn), just as “the two suns” (shamsayn) or “the two moons” (qamarayn) are used.
The author of Taysir al-Qari made a mistake when he said that Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) did not migrate to Abyssinia. In fact, Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was the very first to set out towards Abyssinia, taking his wife Ruqayyah (radi Allahu anha) with him. Perhaps this is a typographical error, and the author’s statement should be that Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) did not migrate a second time (Wahidi).
In another narration, eighty lashes are mentioned. This does not contradict the previous, because when eighty lashes were given, forty were certainly included, or the lashes may have been doubled, so that forty strikes amounted to eighty lashes.
Those who testified to Walid’s drinking of wine were Humran and Sa’b.
The narration of Yunus has been connected by Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) himself in the chapter on the virtues of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), and the narration of Zuhri’s nephew has been connected by Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid.

Hadith Commentary:

From this hadith, Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has established the migration (hijrah) to Abyssinia, that Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu participated in the first migration to Abyssinia, and his wife Hazrat Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha was with him.
When news about them was delayed to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he became very worried.
Eventually, a woman came from Abyssinia and informed that she had seen both of them there.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“Allah Almighty is their companion.”
After Hazrat Lut alayhis salam, Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu is the first person who migrated taking his wife along with him.

Imam Bukhari rahimahullah had this very point in view when mentioning the aforementioned hadith under this chapter heading, but Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu did not participate in the second migration to Abyssinia. Therefore, in the hadith, the two migrations refer to the migration to Abyssinia and the migration to Madinah Tayyibah.
We have already mentioned other discussions related to this hadith earlier, and some will be mentioned in the Book of Hudud, insha Allah ta’ala.
