Hadith 3922

Narrated Abu Bakr: I was with the Prophet in the Cave. When I raised my head, I saw the feet of the people. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! If some of them should look down, they will see us." The Prophet said, "O Abu Bakr, be quiet! (For we are) two and Allah is the Third of us."

Hadith Commentary:
When Allah is with someone, what sorrow can he have? The entire world cannot harm him in the least.
By Allah being with someone, His support and protection are meant, while He Himself, possessing all attributes, is established above the Throne (Arsh) in His essence. Whatever the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, the world saw how it was proven true, word for word, and that even if all the disbelievers of Arabia united, they could not prevail over Islam or the Messenger of Islam (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Truly:
This lamp cannot be extinguished by blowing upon it.

Hadith Commentary:

By "with Allah" is meant His help, support, and protection, while He Himself, in terms of His Essence, is concealed above the Throne.

Whatever the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: it came true word for word; all the disbelievers of Arabia together could not overcome Salam and the Prophet of Islam (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

In one narration, it is mentioned that a man from among the disbelievers of Quraysh began to urinate while naked, so Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said: "O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! He has seen us." He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied: "Do not worry; if he had seen us, he would not have urinated naked in this manner." (Fath al-Bari: 16/7)

Hadith Commentary:

In this hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) that there was absolutely no need to be anxious; Allah, the Exalted, is with us and He will not leave us without help or support.
In one narration, it is explicitly mentioned that if any one of them had looked down at their feet, they would have seen us.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Hadith: 3653)
In another narration, there is further clarification: Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) said:
I was in the cave with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
I raised my head and saw the feet of the people above me.
I said:
O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! If any one of them were to look down with his eyes, he would see us. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured him, saying: O Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)! Remain calm, we are two and the third with us is Allah, the Exalted.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Merits of the Ansar, Hadith: 3922)

In any case, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) that there was no need to be anxious; the help and support of Allah, the Exalted, is with us.

Hadith Commentary:

The event of the Hijrah (migration) is one of the most significant incidents in the life of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the details of which will be mentioned later. Thus, this heading pertains to the virtues of the emigrants (muhajirun), and for this reason, this event has been mentioned here.
Many miracles manifested in it.

Previously, in this hadith, it was mentioned that when ‘Azib (radi Allahu anhu) went to collect his payment, he requested Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (radi Allahu anhu) to narrate the hadith of the Hijrah on the way, whereas from this hadith it is understood that the request was made at home. However, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said:
“Come, I will narrate the hadith to you on the way.”
But Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) states that ‘Azib (radi Allahu anhu) initially set a condition, which Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) accepted, and then on the way, upon his request, fulfilled that condition.
(Fath al-Bari: 13/7)

In the hadith narrated from Anas (radi Allahu anhu), it is mentioned that Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) accepted, and then on the way, upon his request, fulfilled that condition.
(Fath al-Bari 13/7)
In the hadith narrated from Anas (radi Allahu anhu), the clear virtue of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) is mentioned. In one narration it is stated:
A man from among the polytheists, naked, began to urinate at the entrance of the cave, so Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said:
“O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! He has seen us.”
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), saying:
“If he had seen us, he would not have exposed his private part.”
(Fath al-Bari: 18/7)

In the hadith of the Hijrah narrated from ‘A’ishah (radi Allahu anha), it is mentioned:
‘Amir ibn Fuhayrah would bring the she-camels to them in the evening.
In this context, Imam al-Bukhari (rahimahullah) has mentioned an interpretive meaning of a verse:
“When you drive them out to pasture in the evening and in the morning, there is beauty for you in them.”

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), when migrating towards Madinah, hid in a cave of Mount Thawr, into which a person could only enter by crawling on their stomach. Therefore, only footprints could be seen outside it. "Law"—according to those grammarians who consider it to be used for anticipation—according to them, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said this statement at the time when the polytheists were standing at the mouth of the cave, and this is the correct view. However, since most grammarians use "law" in the sense of the past, according to them, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said this statement after they had left, out of gratitude. But this view is contrary to the context and sequence. And the meaning of "Allah is their third" is that Allah, the Exalted, is their supporter and helper; otherwise, in terms of His knowledge and power, Allah is the third with every two individuals.
