Hadith Footnote:
In the hadith, "ghulf katam" is mentioned. There is a difference of opinion regarding "katam."
Some have said that it refers to "wasmah," while others have said that it is a leaf similar to that of the tamarisk. Its tree grows among hard stones, and its branches hang down like fine threads.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was two years older than Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), but in appearance, he looked younger, whereas at the time of arrival in Madinah Tayyibah, the hair of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) had started turning white. For this reason, he used henna (mehndi) and katam (wasmah).
2.
Katam is a leaf similar to that of the indigo plant; its tree grows among hard stones.
Further details regarding this will be mentioned in the Book of Clothing (Kitab al-Libas).
