Hadith 3912

Narrated Ibn `Umar: `Umar bin Al-Khattab fixed a grant of 4000 (Dirhams) for every Early Emigrant (i.e. Muhajir) and fixed a grant of 3500 (Dirhams) only for Ibn `Umar. Somebody said to `Umar, "Ibn `Umar is also one of the Early Emigrants; why do you give him less than four-thousand?" `Umar replied, "His parents took him with them when they migrated, so he was not like the one who had migrated by himself.

Hadith Commentary:
The earliest Muhajirun (emigrants) are those Companions who performed prayer facing both Qiblahs and participated in the Battle of Badr.
From this, the justice of Umar radi Allahu anhu is also evident, in that he kept justice in view without showing any special consideration for his own son.
In one narration, it is stated that Umar radi Allahu anhu fixed four thousand for Usamah bin Zayd radi Allahu anhu, so the Companions asked: “You have set Abdullah radi Allahu anhu below the earliest Muhajirun, but why did you set him below Usamah radi Allahu anhu? Usamah radi Allahu anhu did not participate in any battle more than Abdullah radi Allahu anhu.”
Umar radi Allahu anhu replied: “Yes, that is correct, but the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam loved Usamah’s father more than he loved Abdullah’s father.
After all, the love of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam should have some precedence over my own love.”

Hadith Commentary:

This hadith mentions the migration (hijrah) of Umar radi Allahu anhu and his family.
During his caliphate, Umar radi Allahu anhu fixed stipends for the earliest emigrants (muhajirun awwalin), decreeing that they should be given four thousand dirhams each from the public treasury (bayt al-mal).
By "earliest emigrants" (muhajirun awwalin) are meant those individuals who prayed facing both qiblahs—that is, both Bayt al-Maqdis and the Ka'bah—or those who participated in the Battle of Badr.

At the time of migration (hijrah), Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu was eleven years old.
(Fath al-Bari: 7/317)

This also demonstrates the justice of Umar radi Allahu anhu, in that he showed no favoritism toward his own son in this matter.

Umar radi Allahu anhu fixed the same stipend for Hasan radi Allahu anhu and Husayn radi Allahu anhu as he had fixed for the emigrants (muhajirun).
