Hadith Commentary:
Qastallani said that Jabir's mother's name was Naseebah; her brothers were Tha'labah and Amr. Bara' was not Jabir's maternal uncle, but he was among his mother's relatives, and the Arabs refer to all of a mother's relatives as "khal" (maternal uncle).

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary: 1. Al-Bara’ bin Ma’rur radi Allahu anhu was the foster maternal uncle of Jabir radi Allahu anhu. On the night of the Second Aqabah, he was the very first to pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. At that time, he was a chief among the Ansar. He passed away one month before the arrival of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in Madinah Tayyibah.
3. It should be noted that the name of Jabir radi Allahu anhu’s mother was Naseebah. Bara’ bin Ma‘rur radi Allahu anhu was not his real (biological) uncle, but rather among his foster uncles or among the relatives of his mother. Among the Arabs, all of a mother’s relatives are referred to as “khal” (maternal uncle).
