Narrated `Urwa bin Az-Zubair: I asked Ibn `Amr bin Al-As, "Tell me of the worst thing which the pagans did to the Prophet." He said, "While the Prophet was praying in the Hijr of the Ka`ba; `Uqba bin Abi Mu'ait came and put his garment around the Prophet's neck and throttled him violently. Abu Bakr came and caught him by his shoulder and pushed him away from the Prophet and said, "Do you want to kill a man just because he says, 'My Lord is Allah?' "

The statement of Muhammad bin Umar, which Imam Bukhari rahimahullah has connected in "Khalq Af‘aal al-‘Ibaad."
Hafiz said: In one narration, it is mentioned that the polytheists struck the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam so severely that he lost consciousness. Then Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu stood up and said, "Will you kill a man who says, 'My Lord is only Allah'?"

Hadith Commentary:
In one narration, it is mentioned that once the polytheists of Makkah beat the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) so severely that he lost consciousness. At that moment, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) stood up and said, "Do you kill a man who says, 'My Lord is Allah'?"
(Musnad Abi Ya’la: 362/6.)

Ali (radi Allahu anhu) once said:
Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was the bravest of all people.
He defended the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in extremely difficult circumstances.
And he is superior to the "Believer of the family of Pharaoh" (Mu’min Aal Fir‘awn); rather, one moment of his is better than the entire life of that man, because the latter kept his faith hidden, whereas Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) openly proclaimed his faith with full courage.
