Narrated Sufyan: 'Ubaidullah said: "I heard Ibn `Abbas saying, "Following are some traits of the people of the pre- Islamic period of ignorance (i) to defame the ancestry of other families, (ii) and to wail over the dead." 'Ubaidullah forgot the third trait. Sufyan said, "They say it (i.e. the third trait) was to believe that rain was caused by the influence of stars (i.e. if a special star appears it will rain).

Some people have mentioned the third trait as boasting about lineage, but in the narration of Anas (radi Allahu anhu), the three habits are: boasting about lineage, wailing over the dead, and seeking rain through the stars.
In one narration, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“There will remain in my ummah four habits from the days of ignorance (jahiliyyah) which people will not abandon: boasting about lineage, slandering someone’s lineage, seeking rain through the stars, and wailing over the dead.”
(Sahih Muslim, al-Jana’iz, Hadith: 2160. (934))
Seeking rain through the stars means that if such-and-such star enters such-and-such constellation, then it will rain.
Such a belief is still found among some people today, even though no one knows about rain except Allah Ta’ala. Its explanation has already passed in the Book of al-Istisqa (Book of Seeking Rain).
