Narrated Abu As-Safar: I heard Ibn `Abbas saying, "O people! Listen to what I say to you, and let me hear whatever you say, and don't go (without understanding), and start saying, 'Ibn `Abbas said so-and-so, Ibn `Abbas said soand- so, Ibn `Abbas said so-and-so.' He who wants to perform the Tawaf around the Ka`ba should go behind Al-Hijr (i.e. a portion of the Ka`ba left out unroofed) and do not call it Al-Hatim, for in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance if any man took an oath, he used to throw his whip, shoes or bow in it.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Dawood Raz
Hadith Commentary:
For this reason, it is called Hatim, meaning "the devourer," because it would consume their belongings; the items placed there would rot away or someone would take them.
In view of this association, Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) forbade calling it Hatim, but the general Muslims, without any objection, continue to refer to it as Hatim even now. And this is land belonging to the Ka'bah itself, which the Quraysh left out due to a lack of funds.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
➊ The meaning of Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is that the word "Hatim" is a remnant from the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah). The people of Jahiliyyah used to do certain things, and this Hatim is indicative of that. They would throw their whip, shoe, and bow, etc., into it and swear oaths. If they swore a false oath, they would be shattered in this world. Because of this, people called it "Hatim."
➋ Most likely, Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu felt aversion to using this name because of the character and beliefs of the people of Jahiliyyah, which are now obsolete.
In any case, the Hatim is a part of the House of Allah (Baytullah). The Quraysh, due to lack of resources, did not put a roof over it; therefore, circumambulation (tawaf) should be performed from behind it.
