Hadith 3847

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: To run along the valley between two green pillars of Safa and Marwa (mountains) was not Sunna, but the people in the pre-islamic period of ignorance used to run along it, and used to say: "We do not cross this rain stream except running strongly. "

Hadith Commentary:
Ba'ath, with a ba having a kasrah, is the name of a place near Madinah where, five years before the Hijrah of the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to Madinah, a fierce battle took place between the Aws and Khazraj tribes, in which many of their nobles were killed. Al-Qastallani said: "If you say that sa'y (the ritual walking) is a pillar of Hajj and it is the way and Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), then how did he say 'it is not a Sunnah'? I say: What is meant by sa'y here is its linguistic meaning."
Here, the linguistic meaning of sa'y is intended, not the prescribed (masnun) sa'y.

Hadith Commentary:
Performing sa’i (ritual walking) between Safa and Marwah is a Sunnah, and its origin goes back to Lady Hajarah. However, this sa’i is to be performed in a specific area, that is, running between the green markers where electric tubes are installed is Sunnah.

This is also the position of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu): that running between a specific area is Sunnah.

It is not Sunnah to run throughout the entire valley; rather, this was a custom of the people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), who used to run across the whole valley. Some of our less knowledgeable Muslims also do this.

They should be advised that there is no need to run throughout the entire valley, nor should women do so in this manner.
