Hadith 3842

Narrated `Aisha: Abu Bakr had a slave who used to give him some of his earnings. Abu Bakr used to eat from it. One day he brought something and Abu Bakr ate from it. The slave said to him, "Do you know what this is?" Abu Bakr then enquired, "What is it?" The slave said, "Once, in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance I foretold somebody's future though I did not know this knowledge of foretelling but I, cheated him, and when he met me, he gave me something for that service, and that is what you have eaten from." Then Abu Bakr put his hand in his mouth and vomited whatever was present in his stomach.

Hadith Commentary:

Giving news about the future without a Shari‘ah-based proof is called soothsaying (kahanat) in our Shari‘ah (حُلْوَانُ الْكَاهِنِ), that is, the offering given to a soothsayer is forbidden. This is why Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) vomited and expelled it. He did so out of piety (taqwa) and caution; otherwise, he could have also paid its compensation. Before the advent of Prophethood, in the era of ignorance (jahiliyyah), such practices were very common.

From this, it is understood that a pension received from unlawful (haram) employment is also unlawful. This is extremely important.

It should be clear that kharaj refers to the amount that a slave earns and pays daily to his master, and this is a fixed amount. And Allah knows best.
