Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of what Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu said is that I heard these words from my father, Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib radi Allahu anhu, during the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). However, by "Jahiliyyah" here, the era before the Prophethood is not intended, because Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu was born ten years after the Prophethood. Therefore, in this context, a relative ignorance (Jahiliyyah nisbi) is meant, i.e., I heard this statement after becoming Muslim. He described an incident from his own period of ignorance in these words:
➊ In the era of ignorance, drinking alcohol was a common practice.
➋ It was customary to pour out cups (of wine).
➌ Islam gradually imposed restrictions on this, as is evident from the study of the Noble Qur’an.
