حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرٌو ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَهُ ، أَنَّ الْقَاسِمَ كَانَ يَمْشِي بَيْنَ يَدَيِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَلَا يَقُومُ لَهَا وَيُخْبِرُ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ , قَالَتْ : " كَانَ أَهْلُ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَقُومُونَ لَهَا ، يَقُولُونَ : إِذَا رَأَوْهَا كُنْتِ فِي أَهْلِكِ مَا أَنْتِ مَرَّتَيْنِ " .
Narrated `Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Qasim: Al-Qasim used to walk in front of the funeral procession. He used not to get up for the funeral procession (in case it passed by him). And he narrated from `Aisha that she said, "The people of the pre-lslamic period of ignorance used to stand up for the funeral procession. When they saw it they used to say twice: 'You were noble in your family. What are you now?"

Hadith Commentary:
The people of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) believed in reincarnation; they used to say that as soon as a person dies, his soul enters the form of a bird. If he was a good person, it would take the form of a good bird, such as a pigeon, etc., and if the person was evil, then it would take the form of an evil bird, such as an owl, crow, etc.
Some have translated it as: "You were a good and noble person among your family, now tell us in which reincarnation you are."
Some have translated it as: "You were among your family, but you cannot be among them a second time," meaning that resurrection will not occur.
Just as the belief of the polytheists was that there is only one life, the life of this world, and they did not believe in the Hereafter.
His statement: "كنت في أهلك ما أنت مرتين" (You were among your family, what are you now, twice) — that is, they say this twice, and "ما" is a relative pronoun, and part of the relative clause is omitted. The intended meaning is: "You are among your family, the one you were among," i.e., "the one you are among now, you were in life like that," because they did not believe in resurrection. However, they used to believe that when the soul departs, it flies as a bird; if he was among the people of goodness, his soul would be among the righteous birds, otherwise the opposite. Hadith Commentary:
In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people did not believe in being resurrected after death.
They used to say that after death, when the soul departs, the soul of a righteous person takes the form of a good bird, such as a pigeon, etc., and the soul of an evil person assumes the guise of a filthy and bad bird, for example:
the owl, crow, etc. They referred to this as "Sadi" or "Ham."
The final words of the hadith point to this belief—that your state will be the same as it was in life; if you were good at that time, you will be good now as well, and if you were bad at that time, you will be bad now as well.
In any case, this hadith describes a practice from the era of ignorance that was related to the dead.
