Narrated `Amr bin Dinar and 'Ubaidullah bin Abi Yazid: In the lifetime of the Prophet there was no wall around the Ka`ba and the people used to pray around the Ka`ba till `Umar became the Caliph and he built the wall around it. 'Ubaidullah further said, "Its wall was low, so Ibn Az-Zubair built it."

Hadith Commentary: Hafiz said that the Noble Ka'bah has been constructed ten times.
First, it was built by the angels.
Then by Adam (alayhis salam), then by his progeny, then by Ibrahim (alayhis salam), then by the Amalekites, then by Jurhum, then by Qusay bin Kilab, then by the Quraysh, then by Abdullah bin Zubayr, then by Hajjaj bin Yusuf, and up to now, it remains upon the construction of Hajjaj.
The current Saudi government has rendered invaluable services in the expansion and construction of Masjid al-Haram.
May Allah accept these services, ameen.

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
There was no wall around the House of Allah (Baytullah); rather, there were people’s houses, and only the area of the Mataf (the space for circumambulation) was left open, where people would pray and perform tawaf (circumambulation).
Umar radi Allahu anhu built a wall around the Mataf so that it would be protected from children and animals.
That wall was also approximately one cubit high.
Abdullah ibn Zubair radi Allahu anhu demolished the entire Baytullah and rebuilt it from scratch.
He joined the Hatim to the Ka‘bah and constructed the doors at ground level.
He kept one door for entering and another for exiting.
Hajjaj ibn Yusuf demolished it and then restored it to the way it was before.
Now, the construction of Baytullah is based on the foundations of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf.
In the present era, the Saudi government has rendered invaluable and significant services in the expansion and construction of Masjid al-Haram.
May Allah accept their services and keep this government established and enduring for a long time.
Ameen, ya Rabb al-‘Alamin.
