Hadith 3828

Narrated Asma bint Abi Bakr: I saw Zaid bin Amr bin Nufail standing with his back against the Ka'ba and saying, "O people of Quraish! By Allah, none amongst you is on the religion of Abraham except me." He used to preserve the lives of little girls: If somebody wanted to kill his daughter he would say to him, "Do not kill her for I will feed her on your behalf." So he would take her, and when she grew up nicely, he would say to her father, "Now if you want her, I will give her to you, and if you wish, I will feed her on your behalf."

Hadith Commentary:
Bazaar and Tabarani have narrated that both Zayd and Waraqah went to the land of Syria in search of the true religion. Waraqah became a Christian there, but Zayd did not like this religion. Then they came to Mosul, where they met a priest who presented Christianity to them, but Zayd did not accept it. In this narration, it is mentioned that Sa'id ibn Zayd (radi Allahu anhu) and Umar (radi Allahu anhu) asked the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) about the condition of Zayd. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "Allah has forgiven him and had mercy on him, and he passed away upon the religion of Ibrahim (alayhis salam)." Zayd's lineage is as follows: Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl ibn Abd al-Uzza ibn Riyah ibn Abdullah, etc. This noble person passed away before the advent of Prophethood. His son, named Sa'id, accepted Islam and is among the ten who were given glad tidings of Paradise (al-‘asharah al-mubashsharah).

In the narration, there is mention of the polytheists of Makkah sacrificing animals at the ansab. By this, those stones are meant which were set up around the Ka'bah, and upon which the polytheists would slaughter animals in the names of their idols. Zayd refused to attend the table of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) because he considered the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to be a member of the Quraysh and assumed that perhaps the food on the table was from animals slaughtered at the ansab, and he did not eat the meat of animals slaughtered for other than Allah. As for the reality, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was infallible from the very day of his birth, and it was impossible that before Prophethood he would have participated in the polytheistic acts of the Quraysh. Therefore, Zayd's assumption about the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not correct.

Fakihi has narrated from ‘Amr ibn Rabi‘ah: Zayd said to me, "I have opposed my people and followed the religion of Isma‘il and Ibrahim (alayhima as-salam), and I am awaiting that Prophet who will be born among the descendants of Isma‘il, but I do not expect to reach his time. However, I have believed in him, I affirm him, and I bear witness to his being a true Prophet. If you remain alive and meet that Messenger, then convey my greetings to him." ‘Amr (radi Allahu anhu) says that when I became Muslim, I conveyed his greetings to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) replied, "And upon him be peace," and said, "I have seen him dragging his garment in Paradise." The late Zayd also opposed the custom among the Arabs of burying their daughters alive, as is mentioned at the end of the narration.

Hadith Commentary:

He would rebuke the Quraysh, saying: You claim to follow the religion of Ibrahim, yet you do not act upon it; rather, you are entangled in polytheism.

It is not known from where they acquired the religion of Ibrahim.
In any case, they were averse to idol worship and believed in the truth of the religion of Ibrahim, which is why they attributed themselves to the religion of Ibrahim.

In Arabia, due to artificial honor and hunger, there was a custom of burying their daughters alive.
The Noble Qur’an has taken very strict notice of this evil practice.
Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl (radi Allahu anhu) initiated a movement against this custom, saying: You people kill your daughters out of imagined fears of poverty and do not accept Allah as the Provider (Razzaq).
He himself would take responsibility for such girls.
When they reached maturity, he would return them to their parents or, with their permission, arrange their marriage.

In any case, Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl (radi Allahu anhu) was a standard-bearer of the religion of Ibrahim.
He had intense aversion to idols.
He would vehemently reject the evil customs of the Arabs.
And Allah knows best.
