Hadith 3825

Narrated 'Aishah (ra): Hind bint 'Utba came and said, "O Allah's Messenger! (Before I embraced Islam) there was no family on the surface of the earth I wished to see in degradation more than I did your family, but today there is no family on the surface of the earth I wish to see honored more than I did yours." The Prophet (saws) said, "I thought similarly, by Him in whose Hand my soul is!" She further said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Abu Sufyan is a miser, so, is it sinful of me to feed my children from his property ?" He said, "I do not allow it unless you take for your needs what is just and reasonable."

Hadith Commentary:

Hind, the wife of Abu Sufyan (radi Allahu anhu) and the mother of Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu), who embraced Islam after the conquest of Makkah—Abu Sufyan (radi Allahu anhu) also accepted Islam during this period—was a very courageous and experienced woman. There are many incidents recorded in the books of history regarding her, which serve as evidence of her dignity and greatness.

Hadith Commentary:

Hind radi Allahu anha was a woman of great intelligence and discernment. In her manner of speaking, she alluded to the nobility and familial prestige of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his household. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Your love will increase, and whatever anger you had towards me will decrease further."

The purpose is that, in the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), Hind radi Allahu anha harbored extreme hatred towards the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his family, but due to Islam, this hatred and enmity transformed into love. Now, the state is such that there is no household more beloved than that of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his family. Through Islam, a complete transformation occurred in her disposition.
