Hadith 3821

Narrated 'Aisha: Once Hala bint Khuwailid, Khadija's sister, asked the permission of the Prophet to enter. On that, the Prophet remembered the way Khadija used to ask permission, and that upset him. He said, "O Allah! Hala!" So I became jealous and said, "What makes you remember an old woman amongst the old women of Quraish an old woman (with a teethless mouth) of red gums who died long ago, and in whose place Allah has given you somebody better than her?"

Hadith Commentary:
In the narration of Musnad Ahmad, it is mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became so displeased at this statement of Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that his blessed face turned red with anger, and he said, “What thing could be better for me than this?” Aisha (radi Allahu anha) stood up and repented to Allah, and after that, she never spoke in such a manner in the presence of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

It is the nature of women that they inevitably feel rivalry towards their co-wives. The circumstances of Hajarah and Sarah (alayhimas salam) also bear witness to this, and the noble wives (azwaj mutahharat) were also daughters of Hawwa, so this is not a matter of astonishment.

Allah, the Most Pure, is the One who forgives their shortcomings.

Hadith Commentary:

There is no harm in co-wives feeling jealousy toward one another, because this is their natural disposition.
This is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not scold or reprimand Aisha (radi Allahu anha).

This hadith also shows that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had great love for Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), and by remembering the bond of love from the past, he honored the sanctity of companionship both during her life and after her death.
In one narration, Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said:
Allah, the Exalted, has given you a young girl in place of an old woman.
Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became upset, so Aisha (radi Allahu anha) said:
By Allah! From now on, I will only mention Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) in good terms.
(al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir by al-Tabarani: 14/7, 15)
In another narration, he said:
“Allah, the Exalted, did not give me anyone in her place, for she believed in me when people denied my prophethood.”
(Musnad Ahmad: 118/6; and Fath al-Bari: 176/7)
