Narrated Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas: I have never heard the Prophet saying about anybody walking on the earth that he is from the people of Paradise except `Abdullah bin Salam. The following Verse was revealed concerning him: "And a witness from the children of Israel testifies that this Qur'an is true" (46.10)

Abdullah bin Salam was a renowned scholar of religion who, upon witnessing the signs of prophethood in the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) when he arrived in Madinah, accepted Islam. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave him glad tidings of Paradise, and in the verse of the Qur’an: “And a witness from the Children of Israel has testified” (), Allah mentioned him with praise. His virtues are also mentioned in another hadith.

Hadith Commentary: The fortunate individuals to whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave glad tidings of Paradise in a single gathering are known as the ‘Asharah Mubasharah’ (the ten given glad tidings of Paradise). Among them is the narrator of this hadith, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu). However, Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu) narrated this hadith at a time when none of the ‘Asharah Mubasharah’ were alive, and he did not mention his own name because it is not appropriate or suitable for a person to praise himself with his own tongue.
It is also narrated from Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Just now, a man from among the people of Paradise will come to you.” At that moment, Abdullah ibn Salam (radi Allahu anhu) arrived. Juwayriyah, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to her and said: Is there anything to eat? She said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by God, there is no food with us except a bone of goat which my freed maid-servant was given as sadaqa. Upon this he said: Bring that to me, for it (the sadaqa) has reached its destination.

Hadith Commentary:Benefits and Issues: This hadith establishes that if a person for whom it is permissible to receive charity (sadaqah) gives that charity to someone else as a gift, then even if it is not permissible for the latter to receive charity, it will be permissible for him to accept it as a gift. This is because it is no longer considered charity. Furthermore, it is also understood that it was permissible for the freed slaves (mawali) of the noble wives (azwaj mutahharat) to receive charity. Although, regarding the freed slaves (mawali) of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), there is a difference of opinion.
