Hadith 3810

Narrated Qatada: Anas said, "The Qur'an was collected in the lifetime of the Prophet by four (men), all of whom were from the Ansar: Ubai, Mu`adh bin Jabal, Abu Zaid and Zaid bin Thabit." I asked Anas, "Who is Abu Zaid?" He said, "One of my uncles."

Hadith Commentary:
1.
This hadith does not contradict a previous hadith (3758) in which it is mentioned that the Qur’an should be learned from four individuals. There, instead of Abu Zayd and Zayd ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhuma), Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) and Salim are mentioned, because in this hadith Anas (radi Allahu anhu) is narrating concerning the tribe of Ansar. In one narration, instead of Ubayy (radi Allahu anhu), the name of Abu Darda (radi Allahu anhu) appears. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il al-Qur’an, Hadith: 5004) In this narration, Qatadah (rahimahullah) asked Anas (radi Allahu anhu) who had memorized the Qur’an during the blessed era of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he gave the aforementioned answer. In one narration, it is mentioned that when Abu Zayd (radi Allahu anhu) passed away, he had no family or dependents, and he had participated in Badr. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 3996) Anas (radi Allahu anhu) says that after his death, we became the heirs of his (left behind wealth). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Fada’il al-Qur’an, Hadith: 5005)
2.
In any case, this hadith mentions the virtue of Zayd ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhu), that he was a memorizer of the Qur’an (hafiz al-Qur’an).
