Narrated Abu Humaid: The Prophet said, "The best of the Ansar families (homes) are the families (homes) of Banu An- Najjar, and then that of Banu `Abdul Ash-hal, and then that of Banu Al-Harith, and then that of Banu Saida; and there is good in all the families (homes) of the Ansar." Sa`d bin 'Ubada followed us and said, "O Abu Usaid ! Don't you see that the Prophet compared the Ansar and made us the last of them in superiority? Then Sa`d met the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! In comparing the Ansar's families (homes) as to the degree of superiority, you have made us the last of them." Allah's Apostle replied, "Isn't it sufficient that you are regarded amongst the best?"

Hadith Commentary:
Whether you are at the end or at the beginning, in any case your family is also the best of families; you should be pleased with this.
In one narration, it is mentioned that regarding this matter, Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (radi Allahu anhu) wished to present it to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but he refrained at the suggestion of his nephew and abandoned his thought. Here, it is mentioned that he met the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and expressed this thought. Both narrations can be reconciled by saying that at that time he refrained from mentioning it due to that thought, but later, when he met the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he asked him about it.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
The mention of goodness and blessings in the households of the Ansar at this point is in a general sense. If we look at each individual specifically, then some individuals from Banu Sa‘idah will be superior to some persons from Banu Najjar. For example, Usayd ibn Hudayr, Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh (radi Allahu anhum), and ‘Abbad ibn Bishr (radi Allahu anhu), despite being from the Ashhal tribe, are superior to many individuals from Banu Najjar. In the previous narration, it was mentioned that Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah (radi Allahu anhu) intended to present something to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but refrained due to his nephew’s suggestion and changed his mind. In this narration, it is stated that he met the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and presented it to him. The reconciliation between these two narrations is that initially he refrained due to his own thought, but later, when he happened to meet the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he presented it to him.

It should be clear that the aforementioned ranking in virtue is based on precedence in accepting Islam, being foremost in supporting the religion, and sacrificing for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with heart and soul.
