Hadith 3772

Narrated Abu Wail: When `Ali sent `Ammar and Al-Hasan to (the people of) Kufa to urge them to fight, `Ammar addressed them saying, "I know that she (i.e. `Aisha) is the wife of the Prophet in this world and in the Hereafter (world to come), but Allah has put you to test, whether you will follow Him (i.e. Allah) or her."

Hadith Commentary:
Hazrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha) was influenced by the incitement of the people, and became prepared to fight Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) on the grounds that he was not exacting retribution (qisas) from the killers of Hazrat Uthman (radi Allahu anhu). Hazrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) used to say that first let all the people unite, then after a thorough investigation, retribution (qisas) will be taken from whoever is proven to be the killer. By Allah’s command, this verse is intended: ﴿Wa qarna fi buyutikunna﴾ (Al-Ahzab: 33) , which was revealed specifically for the wives of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). To such an extent that Umm al-Mu’minin Hazrat Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha) used to say: “I will never ride on a camel and move about until I meet the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam),” meaning, I will remain in my house until my death. Hafiz said: Hazrat Aisha (radi Allahu anha), Hazrat Talha (radi Allahu anhu), and Zubair (radi Allahu anhu)—all these personalities were mujtahids (independent jurists). Their intention was that it was necessary to bring about unity among the Muslims, and this was not possible until retribution (qisas) was taken from the killers of Hazrat Uthman (radi Allahu anhu).

Hadith Commentary:
1.
On the occasion of the Battle of Jamal, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) sent Ammar bin Yasir (radi Allahu anhu) and Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) to Kufa so that the people could be encouraged to support him.
In reality, Aisha (radi Allahu anha), Talha (radi Allahu anhu), and Zubair (radi Allahu anhu)—all these personalities were mujtahids (those qualified to exercise independent juristic reasoning).
Their intention was that mutual unity among the Muslims is extremely necessary, and this would not be possible until retribution (qisas) was taken from the killers of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu).
Ali’s (radi Allahu anhu) position was that first, let all the people unite, then after thorough investigation, retribution (qisas) would be taken from whoever is proven to be the killer.
2.
In this hadith, following “him” refers to following Allah.
The meaning is that obedience should be given to the leader (imam) of the time, and one should not revolt against him.
In any case, in this matter, the ijtihad (independent reasoning) of Aisha (radi Allahu anha) was not based on reality, but she realized this later.
