Hadith Commentary:
The situation was that after the passing of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) could not bear it; at every moment during the call to prayer (adhan), the name of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would come up, and seeing the blessed grave would renew his wounds with the memory of him.
For this reason, Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) left Madinah Munawwarah. After six months, he returned and saw the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in a dream. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Bilal! What injustice is this, you have left us." Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) inquired about the condition of Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), and learned that she had passed away. He called Hasan (radi Allahu anhu) and Husayn (radi Allahu anhu), embraced them, and wept profusely. People said to Hasan (radi Allahu anhu), "If you ask, Bilal will give the call to prayer (adhan)."
He requested, and Bilal stood up to give the adhan. When he reached "Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah," he wept so much that he fell unconscious. The people also began to weep, and a great commotion arose from the remembrance of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Allahumma salli alayhi wa barik wa sallim.
Our guide and mentor, Shaykh Ahmad Mujaddid (rahimahullah), says:
Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) was Abyssinian.
In the adhan, instead of "ash-hadu," he would say "as-hadu," pronouncing the "sh" as "s," but his "as-hadu" was more virtuous than our "ash-hadu" a thousand times over.
He was a lover of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), while we are sinful and unworthy. O Allah! Include us among the bearers of Bilal's (radi Allahu anhu) shoes.
Ameen, O Lord of the worlds. (Wahidi)

Hadith Commentary:
➊
Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) preferred that now he would remain solely for Allah.
This is a very great virtue and excellence.
➋
From the context, it appears that Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) had the conversation mentioned in the hadith at the time of his purchase, but in Tabaqat Ibn Sa’d it is stated that Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) said to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu):
The most virtuous deed is striving (jihad) in the path of Allah, so now I wish to perform jihad. Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) replied:
I beseech you by Allah and by my right over you that you stay with me. Thus, Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) remained in Madinah until his (Abu Bakr’s) demise.
When Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) passed away, Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu) granted him permission, and he went to the region of Sham, where he passed away during the plague of ‘Amwas.
