And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said that in Paradise, ahead of me, I heard the sound of your footsteps.
Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah: `Umar used to say, "Abu Bakr is our chief, and he manumitted our chief," meaning Bilal.

Hadith Commentary:
Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu) applied the term of leadership and chiefdom (sayyid and sardari) to Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu).
This is a great virtue of his.
This does not mean that he is superior to Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu); rather, Hazrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu) said this out of humility and modesty from his own side. Furthermore, the application of leadership to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) is in the real sense, while for Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) it is in a metaphorical sense.
From this, it does not necessarily follow that Hazrat Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) is superior to the other noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in), just as Hazrat Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) says that he never saw anyone more of a leader than Hazrat Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu), even though he had seen our master Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and our master Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
