Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of this hadith is that when I embraced Islam, only two people had accepted Islam before me, and I was the third. Among those who became Muslim, one was Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and the other was Khadijah al-Kubra (radi Allahu anha).

Whereas in another hadith, Ammar (radi Allahu anhu) states that he saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and with him were a slave and Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) as Muslims. (Fath al-Bari: 7/107)

Apparently, this hadith contradicts the statement of Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu). Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has answered this by saying that among the free people, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) was the third person to embrace Islam.

It is also possible that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radi Allahu anhu) was not aware of others who had accepted Islam, because in those days, whoever became Muslim would keep his Islam hidden from others. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith: 3660)
