Hadith 3718

Narrated Marwan bin Al-Hakam: While I was with `Uthman, a man came to him and said, "Appoint your successor." `Uthman said, "Has such successor been named?" He replied, "Yes, Az-Zubair." `Uthman said, thrice, "By Allah! Indeed you know that he is the best of you."

Hadith Commentary:
Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) had written a nomination regarding Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu) after him. He had instructed his scribe, Humran, to write it down only and not to mention it to anyone, but Humran informed Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (radi Allahu anhu) about it. Upon this, Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) became displeased and exiled Humran from Madinah, sending him to Basrah. Abdur Rahman passed away six months later. His year of death is 32 AH. The people's request for nomination from Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was not due to any displeasure, but rather because of his illness, as it was feared he might not survive it, since the illness of nosebleed (naqsir) had appeared in its early stage, and at that time no turmoil or discord had yet arisen.
