Narrated Anas: Whenever there was drought, `Umar bin Al-Khattab used to ask Allah for rain through Al-`Abbas bin `Abdul Muttalib, saying, "O Allah! We used to request our Prophet to ask You for rain, and You would give us. Now we request the uncle of our Prophet to ask You for rain, so give us rain." And they would be given rain."

Hadith Commentary:
Hazrat Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was the respected uncle of the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he was two years older than him in age. His mother, Numar bint Qasit, was the lady who was the very first to adorn the Ka'bah with a covering (kiswah). Hazrat Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was among the prominent chiefs of the Quraysh. Mujahid (rahimahullah) states that at the time of his death, he freed seventy slaves. He passed away on Friday, the 12th of Rajab, in the year 32 AH, at the age of 88 years. May Allah be pleased with him and grant him His pleasure.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
The greatness and virtue of Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) were acknowledged by Umar (radi Allahu anhu), but even so, he did not include him in his consultative council (shura) because he did not become Muslim until the conquest of Makkah. He accepted Islam after that. He was taken captive in the Battle of Badr. He paid the ransom for himself and his nephew and gained freedom. His kunya was Abu’l-Fadl. He passed away on 12th Rajab, 32 AH, corresponding to 17th February 653 CE, on a Friday. Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) led his funeral prayer. Then he was buried in Jannat al-Baqi‘.
2.
From this hadith, it is understood that asking a living elder to supplicate (make du‘a) is permissible, but seeking the means (tawassul) of a deceased person is not correct. And Allah knows best.
3.
In any case, Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) was very intelligent and wise. When it came to discussing the matter regarding the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Ali (radi Allahu anhu) said: If you forbid us, then the door will be closed forever in the future. Therefore, I will not speak to you about this matter. (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Maghazi, Hadith: 4447)
