Hadith Commentary:
Abdullah bin Ja'far (radi Allahu anhu) says that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to me:
"Congratulations to you! I saw him flying in the heavens with the angels."
This narration has been reported by Tabarani with a sound (hasan) chain of transmission.
(: Majma' al-Zawa'id 9/273, No. 15498)
Imam Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) has also narrated it.
(: Jami' al-Tirmidhi, al-Manaqib, Hadith: 3763)
However, there is some weakness in its chain, but due to other supporting evidences, this weakness can be compensated.
(: Fath al-Bari 7/98)
In reality, Ja'far bin Abi Talib (radi Allahu anhu) fought very bravely in the Battle of Mu'tah, and when his arms were cut off, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Allah, the Exalted, has given him two powerful wings in place of his severed arms, with which he flies in Paradise along with the angels."
For this reason, he is called Ja'far al-Tayyar (the Flyer).
And Allah knows best.
