ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عُمَرَ بِهَذَا .
Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama: When `Umar was stabbed, he showed signs of agony. Ibn `Abbas, as if intending to encourage `Umar, said to him, "O Chief of the believers! Never mind what has happened to you, for you have been in the company of Allah's Apostle and you kept good relations with him and you parted with him while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of Abu Bakr and kept good relations with him and you parted with him (i.e. he died) while he was pleased with you. Then you were in the company of the Muslims, and you kept good relations with them, and if you leave them, you will leave them while they are pleased with you." `Umar said, (to Ibn "Abbas), "As for what you have said about the company of Allah's Apostle and his being pleased with me, it is a favor, Allah did to me; and as for what you have said about the company of Abu Bakr and his being pleased with me, it is a favor Allah did to me; and concerning my impatience which you see, is because of you and your companions. By Allah! If (at all) I had gold equal to the earth, I would have ransomed myself with it from the Punishment of Allah before I meet Him."

Hadith Commentary:
Isma‘ili has connected the statement of Ibn Abi Mulaykah. The purpose of mentioning this chain is to show that sometimes Ibn Abi Mulaykah mentioned Musawwar between himself and Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu), as is found in the following narration, and sometimes he did not, as in this narration. Perhaps this is due to people’s own concerns, while others are concerned for their own salvation. Subhan Allah, the faith of ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu)!
Despite having so many good deeds and possessing the definitive glad tidings from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that he is among the people of Paradise, the fear of Allah was so great in his heart.
For the Noble Lord is independent and free of all need.
When someone as just, fair, truth-seeking, follower of the Shari‘ah, Companion, and Khalifah of the Messenger as ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had such fear of Allah, then woe to our condition, for we are entangled in sins from head to toe—how much more should we fear!

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith mentions the great virtue of Umar (radi Allahu anhu): that he sincerely kept the company of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), and the other noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), and all of them were pleased and content with him. What he said to Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) at the end was perhaps out of concern that he might have fallen short in fulfilling the rights of the people under his care; rather, his words were purely an expression of humility and modesty.
➋
There were two reasons for Umar’s (radi Allahu anhu) restlessness: one was concern for the people, and the other was concern for his own salvation.
➌
If someone as just, fair-minded, truth-loving, follower of the Sunnah, and rightly guided Caliph as Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had such fear of Allah, then we should truly lament the state of our own hearts, for we are immersed in sins from head to toe, yet still do not fear Allah.
Wa Allahu al-musta‘an.
