Narrated Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas: `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked the permission of Allah's Apostle to see him while some Quraishi women were sitting with him, talking to him and asking him for more expenses, raising their voices above the voice of Allah's Apostle. When `Umar asked for the permission to enter, the women quickly put on their veils. Allah'sf Apostle allowed him to enter and `Umar came in while Allah's Apostle was smiling, `Umar said "O Allah's Apostle! May Allah always keep you smiling." The Prophet said, "These women who have been here, roused my wonder, for as soon as they heard your voice, they quickly put on their veils. "`Umar said, "O Allah's Apostle! You have more right to be feared by them than I." Then `Umar addressed the women saying, "O enemies of yourselves! You fear me more than you do Allah's Apostle ?" They said, "Yes, for you are harsher and sterner than Allah's Apostle." Then Allah's Apostle said, "O Ibn Al-Khattab! By Him in Whose Hands my life is! Never does Satan find you going on a way, but he takes another way other than yours."

Hadith Commentary:
You made the supplication: "O Allah! Grant honor to Islam through the Islam of either Umar or Abu Jahl."
Allah accepted your supplication in favor of Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
When he embraced Islam, the Muslims began to perform prayers openly in the Ka'bah, and the path for the propagation of Islam was opened.
The incident of his embracing Islam is well-known.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
This hadith establishes the virtue of Umar (radi Allahu anhu), that even Satan fears him to the extent that when Satan sees Umar (radi Allahu anhu) on a path, he changes his own path. That is, even Satan himself is greatly overawed and frightened by him.
➋
The fact that the women were overawed by Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is evident in that, upon merely hearing his voice, they quickly went into seclusion (purdah). If mere seclusion was the only objective, they could have simply covered themselves with their shawls while sitting there.
Moreover, some of the women were mahram (unmarriageable kin) to Umar (radi Allahu anhu), such as Hafsa (radi Allahu anha). The fact that all of them went into seclusion is proof that they were all overawed by Umar (radi Allahu anhu) and feared him.
They did not rise from the presence of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) merely for the sake of seclusion.
➌
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expressed amazement at their conduct because they acted hastily and did not wait to see whether Umar (radi Allahu anhu) would be granted permission to enter or not.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
This hadith sheds light on the supreme virtue of Umar radi Allahu anhu, that even Satan fears him.
In another hadith, it is mentioned that Satan flees from the shadow of Umar radi Allahu anhu.
Now, there should be no objection that this implies the superiority of Umar radi Allahu anhu over the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, because this is a specific matter; just as thieves and robbers fear the police chief more than they fear the king himself.

Hadith Commentary:
In another narration, it is stated that Satan flees from the shadow of Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
The Rawafid (Rafidites) have objected to the authenticity of this hadith, but this is entirely based on ignorance and personal desires. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the sovereign of the time, a mercy to the worlds (rahmatul-lil-alameen), and the mercy and grace of kings is such that even wrongdoers have hope for favor and kindness from the king.
Umar (radi Allahu anhu) was like a chief of police (kotwal).
The primary duty of a chief of police is to apprehend wrongdoers and bandits, and wrongdoers fear the chief of police more than they fear the king.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
Apart from this reality, two prominent characteristics of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) were as follows:
a.
He did not fear any reproach nor cared about it when fulfilling the duty of enjoining good and forbidding evil (amr bil-ma‘ruf wa nahi ‘anil-munkar).
There are numerous examples of this in the books of hadith, and this topic itself demands a separate treatise.
b.
He was very strict in religious matters.
Due to these two characteristics, he was granted this honor by Allah that Satan could not confront him.
2.
It should be noted that this does not prove his infallibility, because that is a special quality of the Prophets (alayhimus-salam), in which no one else shares.
3.
From Satan’s fleeing, it does not necessarily follow that he was also rendered incapable of casting whispers (waswasah).
(Fath al-Bari: 7/61)
4.
Through religious steadfastness and fulfilling the duty of enjoining good, to some extent, one can remain protected from the mischief of Satan.
Although the distinction of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) cannot be attained, nevertheless, through these qualities, one can exercise control over satanic whispers.
