Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: Allah's Apostle said. "While (in a dream), I was standing by a well, drawing water from it. Abu Bakr and `Umar came to me. Abu Bakr took the bucket (from me) and drew one or two buckets of water, and there was some weakness in his drawing. May Allah forgive him. Then Ibn Al-Khattab took the bucket from Abu Bakr, and the bucket turned into a very large one in his hands. I had never seen such a mighty person amongst the people as him in performing such hard work. He drew so much water that the people drank to their satisfaction and watered their camels." (Wahab, a sub-narrator said, "till their camels drank and knelt down.")

Hadith Commentary:
This hadith has already been mentioned previously, and this weakness of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was not a flaw, as it was innate to him. Despite this weakness, he was the first to take hold of the bucket, and from this, his superiority over Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is established.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
By "well" is meant a reference to religion, which is the source of life for souls and from which all matters of livelihood and the Hereafter are fulfilled.
➋
By "weakness" is an allusion to the trial of apostasy (fitnah of riddah) that appeared during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), in which he had no fault; rather, he stood as a mountain of steadfastness and confronted these tribulations.
It is also possible that this refers to his gentle temperament, that he was not harsh.
➌
In any case, despite this weakness, he took hold of the bucket before Umar (radi Allahu anhu); from this, his superiority over Umar (radi Allahu anhu) is established.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In this hadith, a dream of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is described, and the dream of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is revelation (wahy). Its interpretation is the work of caliphate and leadership (emirate).
Drawing water refers to performing communal services for the people.
The work of the caliphate was carried out by Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) for two or three years.
During his caliphate, due to internal discord, conquests could not take place, which is alluded to in the form of weakness.
After him, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) took on this responsibility, and he performed this task with full strength, and conquests occurred.
The Islamic government expanded greatly, people found prosperity through war booty (mal al-ghanima), and internal stability was also established.
➋
In this dream, there is a clear indication that after the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), the work of the caliphate will be carried out by Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu).
After him, Umar (radi Allahu anhu) will be appointed to this position.
And Allah knows best.

Hadith Commentary:
This translation applies when the word "bikrah" in the hadith is with a fathah on the ba and kaf, meaning the round wooden pulley from which the bucket is suspended. If "bikrah" is with a sukoon on the kaf, then the translation would be: the bucket with which water is given to the young she-camel.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
In this hadith, there is an indication towards the caliphate of the two Shaykhs, and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has likened the affairs of the Muslims to a well.
Since people’s lives depend on water and their survival is due to it, and providing water to people is akin to managing their affairs and organizing their interests, during the caliphate of Umar (radi Allahu anhu), Islam saw great progress and conquests occurred, as a result of which people became prosperous.
In his era of caliphate, justice and fairness were widely established.
In any case, compared to Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), his period of rule was much longer.
Despite the conquests, discord was not allowed to flourish as it did during the caliphate of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu); ultimately, the martyrdom of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was the result of that discord.
➋
The final words of the hadith, that the people were satiated and they gave water to their camels as well, point towards the caliphate of Umar al-Faruq (radi Allahu anhu), because during his era Islam expanded and people found comfort and tranquility.
In this hadith, the virtues and merits of Umar (radi Allahu anhu) have been mentioned.
➌
It is the habit of Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) that, in accordance with a word mentioned in the hadith, he provides a linguistic explanation of the Qur’anic words; thus, he has given the linguistic explanation of the word “ʿabqari,” although in the hadith it refers to an expert, experienced person, and the leader of the people.
And Allah knows best.
