Hadith 3641

Narrated Muawiya: I heard the Prophet saying, "A group of people amongst my followers will remain obedient to Allah's orders and they will not be harmed by anyone who will not help them or who will oppose them, till Allah's Order (the Last Day) comes upon them while they are still on the right path."

Hadith Commentary: Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu) was also in Syria. His intention was that the people of Syria are meant by this hadith, but this is not an exclusivity. The meaning of the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that all the people of my ummah will not go astray at once; rather, there will always, without fail, remain a group firmly established upon the truth. And this is the group of Ahl al-Hadith. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) has stated this, and many other scholars have explicitly written that the people referred to in this prophecy are those who, turning away from disputation and the opinions of men, have made only the apparent texts of the Book and the Sunnah the basis of their actions, and have adopted the way of the Companions, the Followers (Tabi‘in), the Followers of the Followers (Atba‘ al-Tabi‘in), the hadith scholars, and the mujtahid imams. It is evident that these aforementioned elders of Islam were not victims of the current rigid imitation (taqlid), nor were there among them different groups named after schools of thought, as later emerged, to the extent that even the Sacred Ka‘bah was divided into four prayer spaces.

Thanks be to Allah the Exalted that as a result of the efforts of the Ahl al-Hadith group, today Muslims are once again turning towards the Book and the Sunnah.

Hadith Commentary:

These two hadiths are also among the signs of prophethood because from the time of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) until now, this characteristic has remained and will continue to remain until the Day of Judgment.
The dominance mentioned in the hadith refers to political and moral dominance, because it is not necessary that the victorious group (ta’ifah mansurah) be from among the officials of the government.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) used to say: “If by this are not meant the Ahl al-Hadith, then I do not know who they would be.” However, Imam Bukhari (rahimahullah) has taken it to mean the group of people of knowledge, as he himself has explicitly stated.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Al-I‘tisam bil-Kitab wa al-Sunnah, before hadith: 7311)

The government of Amir Mu‘awiyah (radi Allahu anhu) was in the region of Sham (Greater Syria). He presented this hadith as evidence for the truth of his position, because at that time the manifest and victorious group (ta’ifah zahirah wa mansurah) was only his. However, this is not a particular distinction, rather the intent of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that all the people of my ummah will not suddenly go astray; rather, there will always be those who nurture this Shari‘ah, and they will remain until the Day of Judgment, alhamdulillah.
As a result of the efforts of the Ahl al-Hadith, people are turning towards the Book and the Sunnah.

Hadith Commentary:

In the aforementioned ahadith, the group that is mentioned as remaining steadfast upon the truth has had their methodology clarified in other ahadith with the words that they will be those who follow my way and the way of my noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in).
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Iman, Hadith: 2641)

Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah, in order to establish his chapter heading, has used as evidence the phrase:
"Until the command of Allah comes."
By this is meant that cosmic and decreed command (amr kawni wa qadari) which Allah, exalted is He, decided fifty thousand years before the creation of the heavens and the earth, as has already been mentioned previously with reference to Sahih Muslim. Then, this decree was revealed by Allah to His Messenger, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so that he, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, could teach it to his ummah.
When its appointed time arrives, Allah, exalted is He, will bring it about with the word "Kun" ("Be!").
The intent of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah is that this command of Allah is among His attributes and is uncreated.
This command (amr) and the speech (qawl) of Allah are one and the same thing, and the Day of Resurrection is a creation of Allah which will be established by the effects of the word "Kun."
Al-Allamah Ibn Battal states:
The intent of Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah is to refute the Mu'tazilah, who say that this command of Allah is created.
Their stance is contrary to the scholars of the Salaf.
And Allah knows best.
