Narrated Anas: Once two men from the companions of Allah's Apostle went out of the house of the Prophet on a very dark night. They were accompanied by two things that resembled two lamps lighting the way in front of them, and when they parted, each of them was accompanied by one of those two things (lamps) till they reached their homes.

Hadith Commentary:
This was the supplication of the Noble Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and Allah the Exalted granted him light.
In the narration of ‘Abd al-Razzaq, it is mentioned that his staff became illuminated like a lamp.
Some scholars of Islam have stated that his fingers became radiant. The difference lies in the perception of the observers: some thought that the staff was shining, while others understood that this light was emanating from his fingers. From this, the reality of the miracles (karamat) of the friends of Allah (awliya Allah) is established. However, fabricating false miracles is a most heinous crime.
This is what the people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah) of today continue to commit, who invent miracles for many opium addicts and drunkards, turning their graves into shrines, and then begin acts of worship at them. Mawlana Rumi has spoken the truth:
“He does the work of Satan but calls himself a saint (wali); if this is sainthood, then curse be upon such a saint.”
That is, how many people are called saints, but their actions are those of devils; upon such deceitful people is the curse of Allah.

Hadith Commentary:
➊
These two Companions were ‘Ubad ibn Bishr and Usayd ibn Hudayr (radi Allahu anhuma).
➋
This hadith is a proof of prophethood, because the miraculous event (karamah) occurred to both Companions, and such a karamah is attained through following the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➌
From this hadith, it is established that the miracles (karamat) of the friends of Allah (awliya) are true. However, fabricating false miracles is among the worst crimes, which is frequently committed among us by the people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah). By spreading tales of the miracles of drunkards and opium-eaters, their graves are turned into shrines.
Perhaps it is about such people that it has been said:
“The work is of Satan, but he is called a wali (friend of Allah).
If this is what wilayah (sainthood) is, then curse be upon such a wali.”
How many people, despite committing satanic acts, are called saints! If sainthood is truly this, then may Allah’s curse be upon such “saints.”
