Hadith 3634

Narrated `Abdullah: Allah's Apostle said, "I saw (in a dream) the people assembled in a gathering, and then Abu Bakr got up and drew one or two buckets of water (from a well) but there was weakness in his drawing. May Allah forgive him. Then `Umar took the bucket and in his hands it turned into a very large bucket. I had never seen anyone amongst: the people who could draw the water as strongly as `Umar till all the people drank their fill and watered their camels that knelt down there.

Hadith Commentary:
The interpretation of this hadith is khilafah (caliphate), meaning that first Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) will receive the caliphate; he will indeed govern, but he will not possess the same strength and might as Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
During the caliphate of Umar (radi Allahu anhu), the honor and greatness of the Muslims will increase greatly.
The dream was manifested exactly as it was seen.
This is also among the important signs of prophethood; whoever, after seeing and understanding these, still does not accept you as the true Messenger, there is no one more unfortunate than him.

Hadith Commentary:

This hadith is also a clear proof of the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), because the dream that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw regarding the caliphate of the two Shaykhs was fulfilled word for word.
In this dream, there was an indication that the caliphate of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) would be brief, and indeed, this is what happened.
Due to the suppression of the apostates, conquests could not take place, and after that, he passed away.

The supplicatory phrase that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) uttered for him does not imply any disparagement of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), nor does it point to any sin of his, because this was a common idiomatic expression among the Arabs.

After Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu), when Umar (radi Allahu anhu) became caliph, the full interpretation of the Messenger of Allah’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) dream became manifest.
That is, the dream indicated that first Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) would receive the caliphate; he would govern, but he would not possess the strength and grandeur like that of Umar (radi Allahu anhu).
During the caliphate of Umar (radi Allahu anhu), the greatness and might of the Muslims would increase greatly.
Thus, the dream occurred exactly as it was seen.
