Hadith 3609

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till there is a war between two groups among whom there will be a great number of casualties, though the claims (or religion) of both of them will be one and the same. And the Hour will not be established till there appear about thirty liars, all of whom will be claiming to be the messengers of Allah. "

Hadith Commentary:

Most of them have already appeared, whose mention is present on the pages of Islamic history. One individual also appeared in India, who claimed prophethood and messengership and led a great multitude astray. Allahumma ihdihum (O Allah, guide them).

The reference to two groups is an allusion to the Battle of Siffin, which took place between two Muslim factions, as has just been mentioned.

Hadith Commentary:
1.
This hadith comprises two prophecies, and both have come to pass, the details of which are as follows.
(a)
The two groups between whom a great war broke out were the parties of Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and Muawiyah (radi Allahu anhu).
A great battle took place between them at the location of Siffin, in which many Muslims were martyred, to the extent that nearly twenty-five of those noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) who had participated in the Battle of Badr were also among the martyrs.
(b)
Before the Day of Judgment, thirty Dajjals will appear who will claim prophethood; among them, Musaylimah al-Kadhdhab, Aswad al-Ansi, and Mukhtar al-Thaqafi are foremost.
2.
The hadith does not refer to those people who made a general claim to prophethood, for such individuals are many; rather, the hadith refers to those who, in a worldly sense, possessed grandeur and authority, and, having fallen prey to the deception of Satan, claimed prophethood.
Most of them have already appeared, whose mention is found in the books of history. Among them, one individual also appeared in the Indian subcontinent, who, by claiming prophethood, led a great multitude astray.
Allah, the Exalted, afflicted him with a disgraceful death in this world.
Maulana Muhammad Husain Batalwi and Maulana Abu'l-Wafa Sanaullah Amritsari (rahimahullah) confronted him in every field.
In any case, this hadith is also among the signs of prophethood, because whatever the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) foretold was fulfilled word for word.
