Hadith Commentary:
In the hadith, mention is made of those people who will not follow the Prophetic hadith. Some of their actions will be good, some bad. On this, Hazrat Maulana Waheed al-Zaman sahib writes: This era has passed.
Muslims used to perform good deeds, they used to pray, but at the same time, they did not pay attention to following the Sunnah. They were entangled in many innovations (bid‘ah), and above all, the most significant issue was that they had set aside the Qur’an and hadith.
They thought that now there was no longer any need for the Qur’an and hadith.
The mujtahids have already sifted through everything, and whatever needed to be extracted has been extracted.
They would sometimes recite the Qur’an as a blessing (tabarruk) at gatherings like the third or tenth day after death (tijah or dahm).
They would hear the words of the Qur’an during the tarawih prayers.
They would also sometimes read hadith as a blessing (tabarruk).
They would not read it with the intention of acting upon it.
The rest of their lives would be spent on Hidayah, Sharh Wiqayah, Kanz, Quduri, Sharh Mawahib, and Sharh ‘Aqa’id. O servants of Allah! What benefit is there in all these books? If you had taught your children the Qur’an and Sahih Bukhari with understanding, these two books would have sufficed for you.
In this hadith, some other people are also identified who, outwardly, will take the name of Islam, but inwardly, they will be callers to Hellfire.
That is, in their hearts, they will be confirmed disbelievers and atheists. By this, those westernized people can also be meant who, despite taking the name of Islam, are enamored with Western civilization and mock Islam.
They call Islam an outdated religion and the Qur’an an outdated book.
Day and night, they sing the praises of Western civilization and consider it a matter of pride to become English from head to toe.
They eat like them and urinate standing up like them.
In short, these lovers of modern civilization, who have completely abandoned Islam yet still take its name, are one hundred percent included in the severe warning mentioned in this hadith (Sharh Waheedi).
This hadith also has a special connection of prophecy regarding the Khawarij, who raised the banner of rebellion against Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu and who, outwardly, would invoke the name of the Noble Qur’an and, by reciting the verse:
﴿إِنِ الْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ﴾ (al-An‘am: 57)
would declare Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu a disbeliever.
These people caused severe harm to Islam, as did those who, by going to extremes in their love for Hazrat Ali radi Allahu anhu, became entangled in the gravest of erroneous beliefs.
